    Demos - Fallen Angel

Does anyone know any websites where you can hear samples of demos of sg songs that never got recorded. Songs like "Aubergine Girl". etc. Also ive heard from somewhere that there were 14 songs recorded for affirmation. Obviuosly there was "I dont care" which wasnt on the album but some people are saying there was another song which wasnt released at all. I read somewhere possibly a song called "My world its yours". Can anyone elaborate?

Ive just gotten a copy of "fallen angel". Yet again darren has released a song as a bonus track which shouldve been on the album. Add it to the list including "I dont care, so bad, where you want to be and although i havnt heard it i gather when you say you love me could probably be included as well. Fallen angel is strange because TDTWM has 25 songs on it and FA is better then half of those and probably one of the 5 most commercial "radio friendly" songs on the album. All i can come up with is that fallen angel, like so bad and even i dont care from a lyrical and structural point of view are a little bit simplar then a lot of songs that darren does. They're very good to listen to but arent overly theatrical or drawn out. I mean a song like Sense of Humour or step into the light thats very drawn out and well constructed. But i prefer these kinds of songs so i wonder what darrens reasoning is or the records companys reasoning is in previous albums for not including these songs

You'll probably have to wait and see if a generous fan will give you a copy of the tracks from the demo tape. There used to be a website called 'Savage Garden Radio' or something like that, but it has since been taken down. I had them on my old computer, but stupidly neglected to save them, so if anybody else here has them, I'd like them too!

Never heard of a 14th track for Affirmation, just the 13 that we know about. As a little bit of trivia, 'I Don't Care' was supposed to go between 'The Animal Song' and 'The Lover After Me' on the album, but was taken off for unknown reasons.

What goes on an album is up to the artist or the record company, depending on who has the last say. I suppose with Savage Garden, the debut was largly up to Darren, Daniel and Charles Fisher, since they were unknowns and had to sell themselves on what they thought were the best songs.

With Affirmation, we've been told by Darren that 'I Knew I Loved You' came about as a demand from the record company to have another 'Truly Madly Deeply' to help sell the record.

With The Tension And The Spark, Darren mentioned in an interview that he sat down in a meeting to decide the final tracklisting, and I suppose with This Delicate Thing We've Made, Darren had complete control on what he wanted on there.

Personally, I agree that some b-sides are superior to some album tracks. I feel that 'Where You Want To Be' would have been a good closing track for Spin and that 'The Heart Wants What It Wants' should have been more than just a bonus track, i.e. a part of the core album. I also wouldn't have included the sickly sweet 'I Miss You' nor the frankly appauling 'Dirty' on the album. Songs like 'Ride' and 'So Bad' sound good initially, but to me they're just trashy pop that I'm glad Darren has avoided since.

I'll go on record as saying The Tension And The Spark is perfect as it is. I wouldn't change a thing there.

This Delicate Thing We've Made could be scaled down to a single album. Personally, I think the first disc is pretty much fantastic, with the exception of the last two songs 'Bombs Up In My Face' and 'The Great Big Disconnect', as I'm not a big fan of political songs, the remaining 11 songs all deserve their place on the album. Disc two I feel is a bit patchy. Songs like 'Walk Away', 'I Just Want You To Love Me' and 'A Hundred Challenging Things A Boy Can Do', while lyrically good, sound very sparse musically, and I don't like the sudden sharp turn in mood between 'I Just Want You To Love Me' and 'Setting Sun'. As for 'Fallen Angel', yeah it's a great song, but I wouldn't have a clue where to put it on the album without breaking the narrative flow. I'd need to give that some thought...

You mean Savagemedia? Oh that was a great one! It had the songs, b-sides, lives, remixes, audio and video, and even MIDIs. The owner suddenly needed 500 GB to allocate the files. He couldn't find them so he only left the MIDIs and eventually the site went under.

I wouldn't mind the demos as well... anyone?

Really? Wow! Though I can't imagine it in between those. MAybe between "hold Me" and "IKILY"? It would fit nicely instead of "The Animal Song", which I admit grows out of me more and more lately.

Exactly. Little trivia here as well: "Mine" was intended to be included in the US version as well. But the "crosses & crucifixes" line kinda scared the record label and it was ditched.

With Affirmation, we've been told by Darren that 'I Knew I Loved You' came about as a demand from the record company to have another 'Truly Madly Deeply' to help sell the record.
I heard two stories about the song spinning off that statement. One, that they sat down and basically wrote it up as a big F-U to the powers that be. Two, they presented the songs and the label said the album needed a TMD, so they came up with the song in that very place. I believe the former is more likely to be true.

I admit I like "Dirty". It's nonsensically funny. Now, I agree on "I miss you" (b-side material), "WHere you want to be" and "Ride" (the "My people" lines excluded). "So Bad" is a stinker.

This Delicate Thing We've Made could be scaled down to a single album. Disc one is quite good and it features a brilliant opening followed by one of Darren's best songs ever ("Who would have thought"). Now, I'd ditch "Waking up" (silly!), "Listen all you people" (silly again!), and "Bombs up in the face" (irksomely weird). I love Disconnect.

Disc two is... strange. I used to hate it but some songs grew on me (remarkable example: "Me Myself & I" and "Neverland"). I'd gladly ditch "100 challenging things" and "Tuning of violins".

Yeah, it seemed a bit odd at first, but it's actually a good transitional song for the album. The first 7 songs on the album are the more commercial up beat songs, and the last 5 are the slower and more personal songs. 'I Don't Care' going between 'The Animal Song' and 'The Lover After Me' bridges the change in style. I think it works very well.

to CLAB236: I am going to respond on each of the things you said about the many quotes in your last post here.

    1. I remember Saveagemedia and that moved and eventually became storage garden. But that too died a strange death.

    2. I Don't Care was going to be originally on the album in the place of The Animal Song. They did the TAS single but never intended on it making the album. But a last minute change cause they thought IDC did not have the right feel for the album. So TAS replaced IDC. You're quoted info is a little wrong there.

    3. I agree with the point made there. The record companies have all the say. I've not heard about that mine thing. But it does seem plausable.

    4. The quote is true to a point about the song. The record company felt another TMD like song would sell the 2nd album. And Darren and Daniel say on the Affirmation track by track cd that they wrote it as another sweet innocent love song. It was it's own thing. Yes it helped to sell the record like the company wanted. But it was not son of TMD or TMD the 2nd. It was it's own song with it's own love.

    5. I agree totally there. I've loved all of his b-sides. Well all bar the latest album (TDWM) ones. They are rather aweful. But the previous ones are all really good. My favourites being Zero, WYWTB, FAYF and IDC.

    6. I agree. One disc would have been much better. But for me I really like 1/2 of each disc. 12 tracks from the entire album I have on my itunes playlist. And listen to on the odd occasion.

    ************************

And about the demo tracks. I have the tracks from the 2nd demo tape. All cleaned up and really a pleasure to listen to. But I don't have anything from the first demo tape. No one does. They are just lost to history now days.

And I am willing to upload those 15 tracks + anything else you might want. SG or DH solo wise. Just ask I have almost every track, demo, etc that was ever put out.

So just let me know what you want. And bug me with a PM if I don't respond. So I will get the message and can get them to you.

    ************************

And just remember 8 of the tracks on the first album were portrayed as singles or single like from the first album.
And 7 tracks from the 2nd album had the same fate.
Really that's almost unheard of in the music business. Most albums have 2 or 3 tracks used as singles to sell the album. It seems most of the songs SG made had single potential. And I agree. Most but not all. By favourite 2 SG songs. One was a single in Japan only. And the other not a single. But I really think both of them aren't single material. But they have their own charm. And that's why I love them.

There are 13 track promo discs of Affirmation out there (CD-Rs burned in the studio) that have both I Don't Care AND The Animal Song on there. There are not many of these!!

There are also promos out there where you can hear a bit of I Don't Care at the start or end of one of the tracks (I forget if it is beginning or end as there are not many out there). This is because the tracks were intended to blend into each other which was fixed before the retail release (as well as general promos around the time of release).

Ah that I did not know. I was just going off the affa track by track release. And the info in the Affa songbook. Yeah I'm sure it was pulled at the last minute. But how it started, you are probably right. Well you do know more about their music than almost anyone else I know.

I happen to have the Demos still, and I have some audio recording software (cuz I am a vocalist) and I have cleaned up the demos a little bit. God rid of some of the fuzz and such. Shoot me an E-mail at Insatiable_darkness4@yahoo.com if you want them
