You'll probably have to wait and see if a generous fan will give you a copy of the tracks from the demo tape. There used to be a website called 'Savage Garden Radio' or something like that, but it has since been taken down. I had them on my old computer, but stupidly neglected to save them, so if anybody else here has them, I'd like them too!
Never heard of a 14th track for Affirmation, just the 13 that we know about. As a little bit of trivia, 'I Don't Care' was supposed to go between 'The Animal Song' and 'The Lover After Me' on the album, but was taken off for unknown reasons.
What goes on an album is up to the artist or the record company, depending on who has the last say. I suppose with Savage Garden, the debut was largly up to Darren, Daniel and Charles Fisher, since they were unknowns and had to sell themselves on what they thought were the best songs.
With Affirmation, we've been told by Darren that 'I Knew I Loved You' came about as a demand from the record company to have another 'Truly Madly Deeply' to help sell the record.
With The Tension And The Spark, Darren mentioned in an interview that he sat down in a meeting to decide the final tracklisting, and I suppose with This Delicate Thing We've Made, Darren had complete control on what he wanted on there.
Personally, I agree that some b-sides are superior to some album tracks. I feel that 'Where You Want To Be' would have been a good closing track for Spin and that 'The Heart Wants What It Wants' should have been more than just a bonus track, i.e. a part of the core album. I also wouldn't have included the sickly sweet 'I Miss You' nor the frankly appauling 'Dirty' on the album. Songs like 'Ride' and 'So Bad' sound good initially, but to me they're just trashy pop that I'm glad Darren has avoided since.
I'll go on record as saying The Tension And The Spark is perfect as it is. I wouldn't change a thing there.
This Delicate Thing We've Made could be scaled down to a single album. Personally, I think the first disc is pretty much fantastic, with the exception of the last two songs 'Bombs Up In My Face' and 'The Great Big Disconnect', as I'm not a big fan of political songs, the remaining 11 songs all deserve their place on the album. Disc two I feel is a bit patchy. Songs like 'Walk Away', 'I Just Want You To Love Me' and 'A Hundred Challenging Things A Boy Can Do', while lyrically good, sound very sparse musically, and I don't like the sudden sharp turn in mood between 'I Just Want You To Love Me' and 'Setting Sun'. As for 'Fallen Angel', yeah it's a great song, but I wouldn't have a clue where to put it on the album without breaking the narrative flow. I'd need to give that some thought...
